Ivory Tips for Home: Laundry Tips From Ivory Snow
(Back to Tips for Home)

For best care of your gentle cycle clothing, Ivory Snow recommends:

  1. Sort your laundry
    • By color: Wash separate loads for whites, light colors, similar bright colors and similar dark colors. Brand new dark colors should be washed alone for the first time.
    • By fabric: Wash delicates separately. Lint-shedding fabrics, such as towels, flannels, some bedspreads and robes, should not be washed with lint-attracting items, such as corduroys or velours.
  2. Pretreat or presoak if necessary
    • Pretreat small stains. Apply undiluted liquid Ivory Snow directly to the stain. Allow product to soak in, then gently rub.
    • Presoak deep-set soils, old stains or extensive staining. Soak items in a solution of non-chlorine bleach and the hottest water safe for the fabric.
    Tips for Pretreating
Ivory Liquid is excellent for pre-treating stains on your clothes.
(Test for colorfastness in an inconspicuous area on the garment for 20 minutes before using.)
    • Simply apply a small amount of Ivory Liquid to cover the stain and gently rub.
    • Let sit for 5 minutes.
    • Rinse, then machine wash as you normally would.
Not recommended for any garment labeled as "Dry Clean Only." These garments are not intended to be washed or rinsed in water.
  3. Choose the right water temperature
    • Warm Water is usually best for permanent press, synthetic (nylon, acrylic, polyesters) and delicate fabrics.
    • Cold Water is usually safest for non-colorfast items. It also minimizes wrinkling of synthetics. Always rinse clothes in cold water. Keep in mind that no detergent cleans well in water with temperatures less than 60 degrees F.
  4. Always read the garment care labels
    • Always check and follow the care label on each garment. The care label will tell you exactly how to best care for your garment.
  5. Start washer, add detergent, and add clothes
    • As your washer begins to fill with water, measure and add Ivory Snow to the washer. Then add your clothes.

Ivory Snow is safe for all colorfast fabrics. Here is a quick colorfast test:

How to check if your garment is colorfast:
  • Dissolve 2 tbs. of granular Ivory Snow with one cup warm water or use undiluted liquid Ivory Snow.
  • Dip hidden corner of fabric in dissolved powder solution or undiluted liquid Ivory Snow.
  • Rinse fabric and let dry.
  • If the color of the fabric is unchanged it is colorfast!
  • If color change is detected, wash garment separately in cold water.

Handwashing fabrics
Ivory Liquid is excellent for fine washables that you don't want to put in a washing machine. (Test for fabric colorfastness before using.)

  1. Thoroughly dissolve 1/4 cup Ivory Snow powder detergent per gallon of water or add 1/4 capful of Ivory Snow liquid per gallon of water.
  2. Follow care label instructions regarding water temperature
  3. Put the garment in and squeeze suds gently through it. Let is soak for 5 minutes.
  4. Rinse well in cold water.
  5. Do not wring or twist delicate items. Roll in a clean towel to absorb excess moisture.
Not recommended for any garment labeled as "Dry Clean Only." These garments are not intended to be washed or rinsed in water.
